Chicago Canine Influenza Outbreak

At present, there is a large outbreak of Canine Influenza in the Chicago area.  This strain originated in Asia and was imported with an infected dog or dogs.  Symptoms include runny nose, cough, fever and lethargy.  The canine influenza vaccine that is available is a much older H3N8 subtype strain and unfortunately is unlikely to prevent infection.  Best advice is to avoid high-density dog populations such as the dog park, dog shows, kennels, pound, etc. until this virus runs its course.  We will update this blog as more information becomes available.
